Giving Tuesday Now
Dear Faithful Catholic.
It’s Deacon Keith Fournier, Dean and Chaplain of Your Catholic Voice Foundation - an apostolate that provides free online educational resources to 300,000 enrolled students through Catholic Online School - the world’s largest Catholic school.
As you know, the Month of May has become especially associated with honoring Mary, the Mother of the Lord Jesus. As in many aspects of Catholic culture, grace builds upon nature.
Special love and devotion toward Mary are woven into Catholic piety and culture.
Because it is so naturally supernatural to many of us, we can sometimes forget that some other Christians, particularly members of groups that descend from the Protestant Reformation in Europe, do not understand our practices.
Here are some examples:
Here in the United States, on Thursday, May 7th, we celebrate the National Day of Prayer, inviting Americans of Faith to pray for our leaders, our fellow citizens, and our country.
Even in the secular culture, #GivingTuesdayNow will take place on May 5th. While not Christian at the surface, this appeal aims to create a wave of generosity, citizen engagement, action, and support for communities and nonprofits around the world.
Specifically in the Catholic world, on Friday, May 1, the bishops of Canada and the United States will be reconsecrating their respective nations to the care and protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
As you can see, the month of May is an incredible opportunity for charity, renewal, and devotion.
Mary has a special place in the plan of salvation. Everyone - men, women, children - can great inspiration from this little woman of great faith. In her “YES” to God's call, spoken through the Angel, they can understand that ordinary people can change human history.
May the Lord bless you,
Dean and Chaplain, Catholic Online School
